St. George’s Anglican Parish | Flemington

Local Area

An incarnational understanding of our Christian faith leads us at St George’s to take very seriously our local community, in all its matter-of-factness.

The parish boundary on the east runs along the Moonee Ponds Creek, to Parsons Street, up Rankins Road, and westward along Racecourse Road to Pin Oak Crescent, then follows Pin Oak Crescent and Railway Place East, along the railway line to South Street, where it turns east to East Street, then north to North Street, east again to Mt Alexander Road, north to Ormond Road, and east along there to the Moonee Ponds Creek (running under the Tullamarine section of the Citylink tollway). The parish is wholly enclosed within the City of Moonee Valley.

Residential housing within the parish is diverse: Housing Commission high rise flats in the south, medium to lower density older dwellings combining older residents and younger families moving into the area throughout the Ascot Vale areas and parts of Flemington. There is some commercial and light industrial properties along the main arterial roads (Racecourse and Mt Alexander Roads and the Citylink tollway).

There are four schools within the parish boundary (Flemington Primary School, Debney Meadows Primary School, St Brendan’s Primary School and Mount Alexander College), and at least three child care centres.

There are three other denominations with churches within our parish boundaries: St Brendan’s Catholic Church, which has the school and a kindergarten attached; St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church; and the Newmarket Baptist Church. These are all nearer the Racecourse Road retail precinct than St George’s Church. There are good working relations with these churches, and other neighbouring churches, including joint Easter and Christmas services for the area.
